The Four Types of Luck and The Gravity Hub
Hello my friend, where else to start but by defining the word ‘luck’.
Luck has specifically been taught to you as a game of chance. While this rings true for one type of luck, there are three other types of luck which have been severely discounted in modern society. I’m writing this, without the assistance of AI, to hone in on what I think is the most overlooked ingredient to life-changing opportunities. I will outline the four types of luck (as first outlined by Dr James in the late 70s) and then I will proceed to expand on what I think are the best ways to increase luck, building on the original understanding. I will then speak about the concept of a ‘gravity hub’ and how you can create your own in order to create a force multiplier for the ‘luck’ that you create.
The first type of luck is most commonly known as ‘Blind Luck’. This one is the one you will likely be most familiar with. I like to call this one ‘Lotto Luck’, in that you are at the right place at the right time and you ‘win the lottery’. ‘Lotto Luck’ is what is most commonly associated with the definition of luck.
The second type of luck is ‘Luck from Motion’. I like to think of this as ‘Luck from Reps’, in that you create your own luck through sheer volume. Whether you are creating art, making introductions and/or spending raw time on your craft, the ‘Luck from Reps’ is simply the situation in which you run out of ‘Unluck’. If you are willing to do an unreasonable amount of reps which far exceeds anybody else, you will encounter ‘Luck from Reps’. The key to cultivating this type of luck is to not underestimate the volume required to achieve your goals. If you simply 10x or even 100x your inputs, you will begin to naturally create the compounding cycle that creates this type of luck.
The third type of luck is ‘Luck from Awareness’. I like to think of this one as ‘Luck from Recognition’. This is the type of luck that through experience or pure presence, you are able to see something other people do not. This allows you to take action on value that other people have yet to recognise. The more you spend time doing something, the more familiar you become with the underlying patterns. On the other hand, beginners can also encounter this type of luck by looking at something many others have already but with ‘fresh eyes’. ‘Luck from Recognition’ speaks directly to your vision.
The fourth type of luck is ‘Luck from Uniqueness’. This one I frame as ‘Luck from Reputation’. In other words, your mix of unique skillset or traits creates opportunities for you. Being well-known in a niche community, being known as the go-to source for a specific set of information or even having a specific ability that others do not. ‘Luck from Reputation’ can sometimes mean combining the various parts of what you are and honing in on your uniqueness, thus creating your own archetype. Sometimes it’s not about trying to be better, but leaning more into who you already are and becoming different. By becoming unique, you become incomparable. Incomparable stands out.
Now onto the idea of the ‘Gravity Hub’. I love this idea for its force multiplying effect. In other words, you can make the world come to you by taking direct action to create an environment and/or situations that allow your relationships to compound.
Most people attempt to ‘cold approach’ their way into network expansion. This works but is not always necessary.
The best example of the ‘Gravity Hub’ is the host of the party. The host of the party, by creating the environment, creates a dynamic in which the network comes to him/her. This is not to say that you should host parties, however the fundamental idea here is to consider what your version of a ‘Gravity Hub’ is. Your ‘Gravity Hub’ could be the work you have published, it could be the dinner you host and/or it could even be the content you have released.
There are many different forms of ‘Gravity Hubs’ but the fundamentals of a highly effective ‘Gravity Hub’ are the following.
-
You are responsible for the curation of the attendees
-
Consistency over time which creates opportunities for the network to visit and revisit
-
Shifts the social dynamic from cold outbound to warm inbound
To summarise, luck will be left to chance by the majority while you can curate it and make your own luck. Blind Luck has its place and I’m not dismissing its role, however understanding that you can become ‘luckier’ through reps, recognition and reputation, means you can begin to ‘engineer’ your own luck. By understanding and implementing a ‘Gravity Hub’ you will also be able enhance your ability to attract opportunities that come through other people. The first step is to recognise you are already lucky. The second step is to create more luck for yourself. The third and final step is to extend that luck to others.
Remember: It’s not who you know.
It’s who knows you, likes you and wants to see you win.
